Occultation
Occultation was a commissioned project for the Richmond Art Center for the exhibit Marking Space.
Occultation is "the act of hiding or blocking from view." While commonly referring to celestial bodies, the meaning can extend to any area. In regards to time, the present occults our view of the past. This silo structure acts as a device for the participant to discover Richmond's past without the present blocking their view. Embedded in the walls of "Occultation" are images of Richmond's historic past. Light shines through these circular "image windows". A constellation of stars is mapped with holes on the ceiling allowing dappled light to illuminate the observer. The constellation map corresponds to the date of the installation of the sculpture.
